Teaching 2007/8
To give an idea of the range of teaching that I am covering at the moment consider what I have been involved in during the academic year 2007/8:
ALL YEAR
I have been Principal Tutor for the Certificate in Christian Rural and Environmental Studies ( CRES), leading the academic side of the course.
I gave some tutorials for a 3rd year module in Biological Conservation which is part of the Human Sciences degree at Oxford University.
SEMESTER 1
I gave five lectures on soil science for the 2nd/3rd year module Earth Processes and Cycles at Oxford Brookes University.
I lectured on Climate Change (3 hours) for the 1st year module Science and Society at Oxford Brookes University.
SEMESTER 2
I co-led (with my wife Margot) an Honours level module in Environmental Ethics for Theology and Religious Studies students at Oxford Brookes University.
I gave a series of lectures for the 2nd/3rd year module Environmental Pollution at Oxford Brookes University.
I gave a series of lectures on soil science for the Masters module, Methods of Environmental Assessment, at Oxford Brookes University.
I gave a series of lectures on Photosyntheis and Plant Nutrition for the 1st year module Energy and Nutrients at Oxford Brookes University.
In February and March 2008 I was heavily involved in HOPE FOR PLANET EARTH. Share Jesus International, the John Ray Initiative, A Rocha, Tearfund and others put on a major national tour at 20 venues for schools and church groups looking at climate change. In total 5,000 teenagers attended the sessions in the day, and 3,000, mostly adults came in the evenings. I was the resident scientist on the tour, and gave all of the presentations on the science of climate change.
SUMMER
In May 2008 we were invited to give some classes on Climate Change and Theology for All Nations Christian College.
In June 2008 we spent a whole morning with the Oxford Summer Program, looking at the science and theology of the environment.
In August 2008 Margot and I took took a seminar for the International Fellowship of Evangelical Students (IFES) on Bible and Environment: Christians in the 21st Century for the Bible and Culture course at Schloss Mittersill in Austria. It was wonderful!
