Chapter 10

Chapter 10- Dreams and visions

In this chapter we considered some of the dreams and visions of those seeking to address environmental problems internationally. We looked at different organisations of importance in the environmental scene that have vision to respond to global needs. We will highlight examples of government and church initiatives as well as scientific advances through multinational organisations. We look at biblical visionaries such as Noah, Jacob and Josiah. We especially highlight the impact of Climate Forum 2002 and its impact on American evangelical Christians.

UPDATE 1

As our book came out in Feb. 2008, the American people were deciding who the Republican and Democrat candidates will be for the Presidential election. In Chapter 10 of our book we looked at the changes happening amongst American Christians with respect to climate change. It is therefore of interest to see what the various candidates policies are on the topic. The source we find most useful for monitoring U.S. views on the environment is Grist Magazine. They have produced a particularly useful chart- Compare the Candidates. It will be interesting to see how high up the agenda the environment is later this year!

UPDATE 2

Since our book appeared the world food crisis, which we mentioned in several chapters, has really started to make the news. In Chapter 10 of our book we covered the controversial topic of GM crops. Now we are hearing more and more that GM crops will be the solution or part of the solution.  But will they, or is this just a cynical attempt by multinational agrochemical companies to increase their profits? An interesting article on this topic, ending a series, appeared on the BBC web site: Could GM crops help feed Africa? (30 May 2008)
