There is a general introduction to the book followed by an examination of the relative value of humans and the rest of creation informed by the teaching of Genesis. We introduce the ethical starting points that determine different approaches to the earth. We then provide an overview of the physical systems of the Earth.

UPDATE

In this chapter of our book Martin describes an expedition in 2002 that he made with two Japanese scientists to the summit of Mount Fuji in Japan. On that expedition we stayed at the weather observatory at the summit. Sadly, one of the scientists on our expedition, Dr. Naoki Kaneyasu, wrote to Martin in October 2007 to say that the observatory is under threat:

Expedition to the top of Mount FujiDr. Hodson,
Maybe you might know, but the Japanese government gave up maintaining the Mt. Fuji Observatory last year due to its financial difficulties. This year, a Non-profit Organization (NPO) named "Valid Utilization of Mt. Fuji Weather Station" was formed by researchers. See http://npo.fuji3776.net/index2.html
The station has been operated by the NPO only in summer for research purposes. I am also a member
of that NPO.  However, we are in hard situation because of the shortage of funding for maintaining the large facilities standing in severe environmental conditions. I would be pleased if you mention this in your book, or in a chat with your colleagues or in your research community so that researchers in this field know the endangered situation of Mt. Fuji Observatory.
With best regards,
Naoki
